Antibiotics
Smithfield Foods is an industry leader in promoting the highest standards of food safety and animal well-being. Therefore, its policies on antibiotic use call for providing the appropriate treatment for animals in need of health care. Providing that care includes administering antibiotics to treat sick animals, and for preventing healthy animals from becoming ill. It does not include the routine use of antibiotics as growth stimulants.
The use of antibiotics in animal production has helped the United States become the world’s grocery store. Antibiotics use is vital for disease treatment, control and prevention. The practice helps ensure a healthy animal and thus, a safe food supply.
Smithfield is following the debate surrounding the use of antibiotics for animal care and welfare, and closely monitoring antibiotic research. Smithfield strictly limits antibiotic use for its hogs and turkeys. Smithfield does no, and will not, routinely administer to its animals antibiotics which have human medical uses. Murphy-Brown does sometimes use, although not on a routine basis, antibiotics that are members of the same classes of drugs that are used in human medicine. The decision to use those drugs is made by a veterinarian who considers what is best for the animal. In those cases, the required dosages and treatment regimens are strictly followed.
Smithfield’s U.S. production subsidiary, Murphy-Brown LLC, has strict policies governing antibiotic use. Those polices includes:
- Antibiotics used along with administration practices to be approved by licensed professional veterinarians.
- The responsible use of therapeutic antibiotics for the specific purpose of treating animals with disease or illness.
- No routine administration to healthy animals of antibiotics used in human medicine.

KFC recognizes that the use of antibiotics in food animals and the possible link to antibiotic resistant bacteria is a complex topic without easy resolution. Use of antibiotics is important to human health, and also important to maintaining the health and welfare of food animals. Preventing disease in food animals translates into a safer product for humans. The use of antibiotics is established by sound science, veterinary expertise, and well-defined regulatory parameters. All antibiotics must be used in accordance with FDA requirements and under the supervision of a veterinarian. KFC's policy prohibits the use of any antibiotic that is significant to human health when used for the purpose of growth promotion. Our policy is enforced through an annual supplier certification process. The KFC Animal Welfare Council supports the judicious use of antibiotics for food animals, under veterinary supervision, to cure or prevent disease, in amounts which are within federal guidelines
